Music at LAC

Music is a joyous, integral part of our church. It contributes to the beauty of our worship service and the spiritual life of our members and community. Our Music Ministry is a unique opportunity to "sound the praise divine" in each of us. Here are some of the opportunities we offer to fully participate in the musical life of LAC.

Chancel Choir
This choir is the backbone of our Music Ministry. We sing a wide variety of music from plainchant to modern gospel, and most everything in between. You may find a chorale by Bach one week, an English anthem by Bairstow the next week, and a traditional Spiritual the week after that.

We sing in Latin, English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian, Hebrew, Luo, and who knows what else in the future. We look to the musical expressions of faith of many cultures in our desire to offer our best to the glory of God.

Our four excellent section leaders blend in with our members but also provide solos when called for, both within a choral anthem and on their own.

We rehearse each Thursday evening from 8:00 to 9:30, and meet each Sunday morning at 9:00 to prepare for 10:00 worship. The commitment is serious, but the spiritual and intellectual nourishment is priceless, as is the simple joy of creating something beautiful each week at worship.

No music-reading ability is required and there is no audition, but we do request a short private meeting with the director to determine your proper voice placement.

Celebration Choir
If you want to sing but do not have the time to dedicate to the Chancel Choir, then this choir is for you. We meet only five or six times a year for a Thursday evening rehearsal and then sing on the following Sunday morning. The music is simple enough to learn in one rehearsal, so don't be shy. Give it a try.

Bell Choir
This group plays our four-octave set of Schulmerich handbells and is open to anyone from 6th grade on up. No previous experience is required, but you need good eye-hand coordination and the ability to keep a steady beat. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30.

Children's Choirs
LAC’s Music Ministry provides opportunities for our young people to grow in faith through music. Our children in 1st through 6th grade can participate in music and fellowship together on Wednesday afternoons from 3:15 to 4:30. This time includes a snack, rehearsal, and fun activities with the Director of Christian Education, Louise Williams.

Instruments in Worship
Musical instruments add a new dimension in sound
. We encourage talented members of the congregation and community to offer their gifts at worship. We have a brass quintet and a string ensemble that regularly join us for worship, and we are often visited by faculty and students of the Larchmont Music Academy.
